HEAP Can Help With Energy Bills

HEAP, the federally-funded Home Energy Assistance Program is intended to help people with low-incomes pay for energy bills. This includes assistance with electricity, gas and oil bills even if heat and utilities are included in the rent. Payments vary depending on household income and type of heating.

The HEAP eligibility requirements are:

•You are a qualified alien or United States citizen.

•Your household income is at or below HEAP’s current income guidelines for its size.

•You receive temporary assistance such as Safety Net or Family Assistance.

•You receive Food Stamps.

•You receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

•You live in subsidized housing and pay directly for heating costs.

To apply for benefits you must provide the following documents:

•A copy of a current rent or mortgage receipt, or lease.

•A birth or marriage certificate, school or baptismal record, social security card or driver’s license for each person in the household.

•Proof of total monthly income for each member of the household for the month in which you apply.

•A current fuel and/or utility bill, or a statement from your landlord that heat and utilities are included in the rent.

In the event of an energy emergency, such as a power shut-off, you can apply for emergency benefits which are in addition to regular HEAP benefits.
