The girls’ basketball team of Christ the King H.S. defeated rival Murray Bergtraum H.S., on
January 15 at Madison Square
Garden to retain their No. 1 in the U.S. standing. All-American Tina Charles (No. 31) sank a lay up at the game-ending buzzer to give CTK the 65-63 victory and send pandemonium throughout the Garden. The victory gave CTK their 40th straight win for a streak that has spanned the last two seasons. The two teams appeared equally matched with both teams racing up and down the court passing, scoring, blocking shots, making rebounds and creating very important assists through the first half.
Charles (20 points, 24 rebounds, an assist and two blocked shots) scored the winning basket at the buzzer to break a tie and the hearts of Bergtraum players, families and fans on hand to see two of the nation’s top local girls’ teams compete in the Nike 6 Invitational Tournament. Leading the offensive attack for the CTK Lady Royals was playmaker Lorin Dixon, a Springfield Gardens resident. The 5’4” guard in the No. 3 uniform contributed 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists before she fouled out with 1:16 remaining in a tight game.
