On the brief side... Congressmember Joseph Crowley recently commemorated the first annual United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27. The world was urged to observe the occasion so that future generations will be spared acts of genocide. Crowley (D–Queens/The Bronx) declared, “This day is dedicated to the memory of 6 million Jews who were killed and millions of European Roma, homosexuals, mentally retarded and other victims of the Nazis. The official designation recognizes the generation of men and women who fought in World War II and the leadership of the righteous who brought light and liberation to the darkest days of the 20th century.” Onorato Announces Correction Officers Exam A civil service examination for anyone interested in becoming a correction officer will be held on April 8, state Senator George Onorato (D–Astoria) announced. The filing deadline to take the exam is February 20 and it must be accompanied by a $30 filing fee. Onorato said both Englishand Spanish-speaking candidates are being sought. Starting salary is $28,444 a year, which increases to $34,742 after one year of training and official appointment. Council Celebrates Asian Lunar New Year Led by City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Councilmember John Liu and others celebrated the Asian Lunar New Year yesterday in the council chambers at City Hall. Liu (D–Flushing) stated, “The Asian Lunar New Year symbolizes the great and wonderful diversity we enjoy as the capital of the world. We look forward to welcoming the Year of the Dog at City Hall next Tuesday and hope for continued prosperity and peace in our great city.” Carrozza Sponsors ‘Valentines for Vets’ Assemblymember Ann-Margaret Carrozza (D–Bayside) and her staff are collecting donations of cards and candy, especially sugar-free snacks, for distribution to hospitalized veterans at the St. Albans Veterans Hospital in Queens and the New York State Nursing Home in time for Valentine’s Day on February 14. The deadline for donations is Friday, February 10 at the district office at 213-33 39th Ave., Bayside. Donations can be dropped off Monday to Friday. Plan To Move P.S. 159 Sixth Grade Delayed The proposed move to remove the sixth grade from P.S. 159 in Bayside will be delayed for at least a year, to September 2007, Schools Chancellor Joel Klein has informed state Senator Frank Padavan (R–C, Bellerose). Padavan and parents of students attending the school, led by PTA President Damari Fallacaro, who objected to the proposed move, met with Klein to state their objections. Their concerns were reflected by Klein’s action, Padavan said. Clinton Gets $300G For SJU Program A Child Advocacy Clinic established at St. John’s University in Jamaica–Hillcrest has received a $300,000 grant from the federal government. The grant was secured by United States Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. “By providing abused and neglected children with free legal representation, St. John’s is serving an important community need while giving students valuable advocacy experience,” Clinton stated. The clinic is a one-semester, in-house, live client, clinical program available to second and third-year students. |
