Congress Acts To Rename Woodside P.O.

Both houses of Congress have passed bills which authorize the renaming of the post office building in Woodside in memory of the late Thomas Manton, Congressmember Joseph Crowley announced yesterday.

The legislation to rename the building at 39-25 61st St. in Woodside, an area that Manton was closely identified with during his long career in politics and as a City Councilmember and Congressmember, was sponsored by United States Senator Charles Schumer and Crowley, and cosponsored by U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton.

Crowley, who succeeded Manton in Congress and as Queens Democratic Leader, stated, "The debt of gratitude owed to Thomas Manton for a lifetime of public service can never truly be repaid."

Throughout his career Crowley noted, Manton "demonstrated true patriotism by making public duty his top priority." In the renaming of the post office; Crowley said, "We pay tribute to [Manton's] remarkable career and enduring memory as a public servant who fought tirelessly for the people of Woodside and Queens to improve our quality of life."

Manton died on July 22 following a brief illness at the age of 73.-John Toscano
