Liu Sued By Disc Jockey

City Councilmember John Liu is facing a defamation suit from a radio disc jockey for calling the man a pedophile, but the court action has not changed his tune about Troi Torain, professionally known as Star, nor his tone.

Responding to the suit filed in federal court, Liu snapped back: "I'm relieved Torain is now targeting me instead of little girls. The fact remains, though, that this is a grown man who states, in the most public of ways, that he wants to sexually assault and commit deviant acts on a fouryear old girl. And that, in my book, is a sick pedophile."

Torain, 42, was recently fired from the hip-hop station Power 105 (WWPR 105.1 FM) as a result of a feud he was carrying on with rival DJ Rashawn Casey (DJ Envy) of Hot 97 (WQHT 97.1 FM).

According to Liu, "Over a five-day period this May, Torain produced and broadcast comments expressing his desire to have sex with, ejaculate on, and urinate on a fouryear old girl [Rashawn Casey's daughter]. Torain also

offered a substantial cash bounty to anyone with information about the girl's school."

As a result, Liu (D-Flushing) said, following a public outcry over Torain's comments, including sharp complaints from Liu, Torain was subsequently fired by Power 105 on May 10 and then arrested by the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit on May 12. He was charged with harassment and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to press reports, a judge recently dropped the charges and gave Torain three days of community service.

Speaking again of the defamation suit, Liu stated, "This issue is far larger than Torain. He's only a pawn for a giant radio conglomerate- Clear Channel Communications-that has engaged in business practices profoundly contradicting their own corporate creed.

"This is a company that sought to hire Torain-in fact, paid him an extended contract worth $17 million-to push the envelope and pump up profits. Saying 'sorry' after being caught red-handed is a meaningless gesture and we intend to hold Clear Channel accountable."

In one recent news story, Torain stated, "I'm not a pedophile" and said Liu should ramp down such comments because he's "interfering" with his business.

Undeterred, Liu said he can't wait to face Torain in court.-John Toscano
