All Aboard The Seven Line

BY GLORIA SANDERS

Photo Gloria SandersPhoto Gloria SandersOur journey on the "International Express" is coming to an end, with two stops in Queens remaining after the 45th Road--Court House Square Station. Mainly a residential and industrial neighborhood, Court House Square was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 2005. It has been recognized for its significant contribution to American history and heritage, based on the quality of its architecture, archeology, engineering and culture.

Among the significant structures in the vicinity of the Court House Square station are the Queens County Courthouse and Square and Citicorp's Long Island City office tower, which opened in 1990. Also located in the Six Windows at CitiGroup Center, the office tower complex, is NURTUREart, a not-for-profit fine arts center founded in 1997, that gives exposure to the area's emerging artists and their works' curators.

Court House Square is also home to the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, the city's oldest and largest alternative and innovative art gallery, founded in 1971. After three years and over $8 million in renovations, the museum formerly known as Project Studios 1 (P.S. 1 Museum) reopened in the Romanesque revival building that had been Queens' first public school, hosting exhibitions, presentations, educational activities, studio programs and publications.

For those who are creatively inclined and interested in the arts, this is a great place to visit and enjoy different exhibitions. Join me next week as we visit the penultimate of the two stops remaining, Hunters Point Avenue.
