Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre Performs Stravinsky’s “Firebird”

The Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre will perform at Queens Theatre in the Park, the premier indoor performing arts center of Queens, located in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Saturday, December 17 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and on Sunday, December 18 at 3 pm.

The company will perform three of their most admired pieces, including Stravinsky’s “Firebird” which they performed with great success at the Joyce Theatre in Manhattan earlier this season. In Rioult’s dance, a young child is the symbol of the bird; her innocence and curiosity are agents of rebirth for the de-humanized creatures that surround her.

“Bolero”, set to the classic Ravel score, reveals another dimension of Rioult’s imaginative response to music. The dance accumulates in density as the music gathers in power, concluding in a series of simultaneously performed solos. An instant hit, “Bolero” premiered in 2001.

The company will also perform their signature piece, “Wein”. Based on Ravel’s “La Valse”, the dance is a devastating interpretation of the atmosphere of Vienna at the close of World War I and a grim realization of the city today.

Executive Director, Jeffrey Rosenstock is excited by Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre’s debut at Queens Theatre. “Their performances here will give our audience the rare opportunity to see three great examples of theatrical styled pieces choreographed to music by two of the last century’s greatest composers.”

Part of the Theatre’s Richmond County Savings Foundation Dance Series, Pascal Rioult Dance Theatre will be followed by Philadanco (Philadelphia Dance Company) in March and the Theatre’s annual visit from the Paul Taylor Dance Company in April.
