Tommy G. Thompson, former Secretary, United States Department of Health and Human Services, delivered the keynote address at the YMCA of Greater New York’s legislative breakfast on November 18th. The breakfast, attended by prominent federal, state and local elected officials, YMCA board members and volunteers, highlighted the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Initiative.

“The YMCA is proud to sponsor programs that provide tens of thousands of children and teens in every borough with the resources they need to live healthier lives,” said Jack Lund, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York. “The YMCA ‘Healthy Kids’ Initiative supports the Y’s mission to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.”

Lund added, “I also want to thank Tommy Thompson for his support of YMCA children and teens. Throughout his career, Mr. Thompson has demonstrated strong leadership and a keen understanding of what it takes for children and families to live healthier lives.”

“Diseases caused by a lack of activity and good nutrition are making our children sicker every year,” said former Health and Human Services Secretary, Tommy G. Thompson, now the independent chairman of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. “I commend the YMCA of Greater New York for its Healthy Kids Initiative, which will help kids lead healthier, happier lives.”

The information session promoted community-wide physical fitness, the creation of new programs and encouraged public officials to develop, maintain and sustain local initiatives for New York City kids. It also informed the audience of how the YMCA helps young individuals make healthy choices to avoid risk factors that may lead to chronic illness. The YMCA plans to hold this legislative breakfast annually.

The YMCA’s Healthy Kids Initiative offers innovative programs and approaches to kids of all ages helping them make healthy lifestyle choices. The YMCA staff introduces youth and teens to age-appropriate health and fitness programs that include information on proper nutrition and diet as well as the many ways to manage and incorporate exercise into their lives.
