New York Style Eats: Good Food For People On The Go

New York Style Eats serves good food—fast. Owner Chris Poubouridis works day and night at his Sunnyside eatery to offer hearty meals with plentiful portions at affordable prices—with everything homemade. The restaurant itself is a treat for the senses. Its clean and comfortable dining room has murals depicting café scenes, creating a pleasant atmosphere in which to eat. There are plenty of tables to accommodate even a large party of family or friends. It’s even fun to visit the rest room—three-dimensional paintings give the impression of a residential bathroom, complete with hanging bath robe, tooth brushes and shower curtain.

Poubouridis is constantly adding new items to the menu, which includes an array of fresh salads, wraps, deluxe burgers, pasta sauté dishes and of course, their marinated chicken breast. Appetizers include spicy Buffalo chicken wings, crispy zucchini sticks, or their fabulous chicken quesadillas, flour tortillas stuffed with mesquite chicken then rolled like a cigar and fried in pure vegetable oil, making them easy to eat and great for sharing. The combo appetizer plate includes a sampling of mozzarella sticks, wings, chicken fingers and onion rings.

The night I visited, the dinner specials included a healthy artichoke and spinach salad with olives, Parmesan cheese, tomatoes and crunchy croutons, for just $8.50. Paired with their hot and crusty garlic bread, this salad was a meal in itself. Fresh calamari and mussels in a spicy sauce served over choice of pasta went for $11.95 and savory chicken Romano, sautéed with eggplant and artichoke hearts in a lemony butter sauce was $9.95. Regular menu items include chicken dishes, shrimp, seafood and pasta entrees. Chicken fantasia is a dreamy combination of grilled chicken breast, broccoli, garlic and roasted peppers over choice of pasta. The generous portion made a great lunch the next day. Fork-tender chicken francese is served with pasta or rice and lots of garlic bread.

For dessert, try the chocolate thunder cake, raspberry cheesecake or apple pie a la mode. Who could refuse brownies a la mode or an old-fashioned banana split? New York Style Eats is a great place to bring the kids too. They'll love the foot-long hot dogs and French fries.

At lunchtime or any time, try one of their freshly prepared wraps ($5.75). Chicken fajita, tender strips of grilled chicken, roasted peppers, onions and salsa is rolled in a flour tortilla. Chicken pesto is rolled with fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and fragrant pesto. The teriyaki wrap includes broccoli, arugula and rice. The wraps go very well with an order of their delicious waffle fries or healthful sweet potato fries.

Chicken breast with favorite toppings can be put on a sandwich and ordered to stay or to go. Tasty tuna melts and triple-decker sandwiches are always popular, whether they're filled with fresh chicken salad, turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato or egg salad. In addition, the "Eats" souvlaki or chicken souvlaki can be ordered as a sandwich or on a platter. Other lunchtime delights include Philly cheese steak sandwiches that require a two-handed grip. Honey dipped fried chicken comes with fries and slaw and a thick Reuben sandwich, layered with pastrami, sauerkraut and melted Swiss makes a very hearty meal. New York Style Eats grills 8-ounce burgers with all favorite toppings, my favorite being the Eats Superburger, with fried onions, mushrooms, bacon and Swiss cheese. The Mexican burger is topped with jalapeno peppers and cheddar cheese, with chili.

At breakfast, omelets are made to order and served with potatoes and toast. Bacon, ham, western, cheese, lox and spinach are just some of the fillings available. Bagels, muffins, pancakes and French toast are made fresh on the spot for a quick breakfast on the way to work, or a leisurely weekend brunch. Fresh squeezed orange juice or steaming cups of coffee or cappuccino will help the wake-up process along.
