Let’s face it: sometimes we don’t want to go to a restaurant but are just not quite up to the task of cooking. That leaves take out. And when America turns to take out, Chinese food is king. The local palace for Chinese take out is Golden House Authentic Chinese Food on Broadway in Astoria, where you can satisfy your cravings for such take out specialties as shrimp with lobster sauce and pork fried rice.

Golden House has been under the efficient management of Jimmy since last year and does a very brisk take-out business. With great prices, freshly cooked Chinese specialties and fast, free delivery, it’s no wonder the phone rings incessantly with incoming orders at Golden House.

Of course, you’ll find your favorite appetizers such as juicy, tender barbecued spare ribs, roast pork ends and a variety of dumplings, either steamed or fried and filled with vegetables, pork or beef (around $4 an order). Light, crispy spring rolls or crunchy egg rolls and shrimp toast are other popular choices to start. Their hot and sour soup cleared my sinuses and the wonton soup is neither salty nor greasy ($1.35).

For an entrée, I would recommend some of the chef’s specialties, such as Happy Family, which marries shrimp, scallops, pork and chicken with mushrooms, baby corn, snow peas and house special sauce ($9.70). It comes to you, along with fluffy white or brown rice and noodles, piping hot in a large container that can be shared by two people. Another creation called Hawaii Five-O combines sweet lobster meat, beef, shrimp, chicken and roast pork with crunchy Chinese vegetables for a unique treat. Shrimp prepared in three sauces, chili tomato, white sauce and garlic sauce, come together in a dish called Summer Rainbow. We also enjoyed curried rice noodles tossed with baby shrimp, roast pork and vegetables, Singapore style.

If you like dishes with a spicy kick, try Hunan Chicken by the pint or quart, Kung Po chicken with peanuts or Chicken with Orange, spiced with tiny jalapeno peppers. An old standby, General Tso’s chicken, remains one of the most popular items ($7.50). Spicy Szechuan beef or beef with garlic sauce bursts with flavor, and the sauce tastes great over rice. Mild beef dishes with peppers, broccoli, mushrooms or snow peas also make for a satisfying meal.

The seafood at Golden House is fresh and high quality. Shrimp can be prepared at least a dozen ways, either with your favorite sauces or mixed with calamari, scallops or sweet lobster meat. The seemingly endless choices allow the diner to try something different each and every time.

Golden House also makes Chinatown style noodle soups. These oversized bowls of soup are a meal in themselves and are chock full of long noodles and your choice of vegetables, roast pork, roast duck, chicken or even meatballs, in a savory broth. These soups make a great lunch. You can also choose one of the items on their lunch menu for just $4.50. Your entrée comes with your choice of pork fried rice, steamed or brown rice and choice of soup. You can’t beat the price and with a minimum $8 purchase, your food can be delivered free of charge, so get your coworkers together and order lunch for the office.

Golden House also prepares fresh Japanese rolls and sushi a la carte or in beautifully prepared combination boxes. For just $8.50, you can sample four sashimi and four sushi with sliced ginger and wasabi on the side. Another combination offers eel, California rolls and cucumber rolls for a light and fresh lunch or dinner. A la carte rolls range from $2.25 to $4 and include yellow tail and scallion, salmon and avocado and spicy tuna. Hot Japanese dishes such as beef, shrimp or chicken teriyaki are also available and come with miso soup, salad and rice.

Try Golden House for your favorite, authentic Chinese and Japanese dishes. Call in an order for lunch, dinner or late night snack. Delivery is fast and free, and with a $10 purchase you’ll get one free soda as well. Golden House is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to midnight for your convenience. I’m getting hungry just thinking about Golden House Authentic Chinese Food.
