Romano Famous Pizza and Gyro… Offers More Than Pizza!
At first glance, you might think that only pizza is served at Romano Famous Pizza. However, the steady clientele and newcomers to the neighborhood will be quick to tell you that anything from a quick slice of crisp-crust pizza to a sit-down meal, featuring Greek style gyros, souvlaki sandwiches and platters and outrageously delicious rotisserie chicken are among Romano’s menu offerings. The prices are unbeatable and owner Bobby Tsambazis keeps the pleasant dining room sparkling clean and well attended with friendly, efficient waiters and waitresses. The tables are adorned with fresh flowers and murals of Grecian villages grace the walls of this family-friendly restaurant.
It all starts with great pizza. You won’t find a crisper, more tender crust anywhere else. The secret is in Romano’s homemade dough and a super hot oven, which makes the pizza exceptionally crisp on the bottom, yet tender. Best of all, it doesn’t “fold” under all the bubbling cheese. A 10-inch personal pan pizza is very popular and at only $4.40, it makes a nice lunch. An 18-inch pan pizza is also a bargain at $9.95. For a dollar or two more, you can add toppings such as pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, olives or ham. Individual slices are also available. No wonder the phone rings with orders for delivery quite frequently.
In addition to their pizza, Romano’s is also famous for juicy souvlaki, gyro and rotisserie roasted chicken. Enjoy a cold beer or share a small or large bottle of Greek wine while you order some of Romano’s delicious appetizers. Spinach pie is one of my favorites and Romano’s spinach pie stuffs flaky pastry with mouth-watering spinach and feta cheese ($3.45). You’ll also enjoy their spicy buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks or crispy zucchini sticks, all of which are great for sharing. I enjoyed a wonderful Greek salad of crunchy greens, peppers and onions topped with chunks of creamy feta cheese, olives and dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) ($6.50). With some warm pita bread, this salad could be a meal in itself.
We may never know the secret to Romano’s famous rotisserie chicken, but we can certainly enjoy it. It’s marinated in special seasonings then slow cooked on a spit to render it tender and juicy. A half chicken with side dishes costs only $8 and is perfect for taking home after a hard day at work. Romano’s is a block from the Broadway N and W elevated train station, and it’s no wonder a queue of hungry commuters was forming for this succulent chicken on the day we visited. For an $8 minimum order, Romano’s will deliver your lunch or dinner to your home or office at no extra charge.
Romano’s gyros and souvlaki have become increasingly popular for their great taste and low price. Gyro meat is slow-roasted and thinly sliced for delectable flavor. Other Greek style menu offerings include juicy, tender, succulent chicken souvlaki, traditional lamb souvlaki or homemade Greek sausage. If you can’t decide, I recommend a combination platter with your choice of two meats. All platters are served with a crunchy Greek salad and crisp French fries, rice or oven-roasted potatoes. Romano’s also offers fried fish. A chicken finger plate is very popular with the kids. These are real strips of fresh chicken, not the frozen kind. Orders include warm pita bread to soak up all the flavors on your plate and creamy tzatziki sauce. At about $8.35, the platters are a great value. If you prefer, get any of those juicy grilled meats on a pita sandwich for about $4.60. The grill does a nice job with rib eye steak too, cooked to order for just $15.50.
For lunch, dinner or snack, try their deluxe charcoal burgers, plain or topped with cheese and served with delicious French fries. The calorie-conscious can get a turkey burger with a small tossed salad here.
Romano’s Famous Pizza, Gyro, Souvlaki and Rotisserie Chicken is open seven days a week from 11a.m. to midnight. To keep prices low, only cash is accepted. Beer and wine are available and so is free delivery. Bring the kids to this family-friendly restaurant that’s also gentle to your wallet.
