Ackerman Awards Overdue Medals To Bayside World War II Veteran

Congressmember Gary Ackerman (D-Queens) recently awarded 86-year-old Bayside resident and Army veteran, Sidney Minkoff, with the medals he earned but never received for his bravery and heroism during World War II. Ackerman presented Minkoff with seven medals—some among the highest military honors—including the: Silver Star, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, American Campaign Medal, Euro-African-Mid-East Campaign Medal with Silver Star Attachment, Combat Medal Badge, Honorable Service Lapel Button. Ackerman secured the medals after intervening with the U.S. Department of Defense. Minkoff, who was an Army Captain assigned to the medical detachment of the 394th Infantry Regiment Division, served on the front lines as a dentist tending to troops in combat in Normandy, France, northern France, and Central Europe. He was wounded twice; in August and October 1944.
