McLAUGHLIN HELPS SIKH COMMUNITY:
In an effort to foster cultural understanding between school officials and the Sikh community in Richmond Hill, the area’s representative, Assemblymember Brian McLaughlin (D) arranged a meeting recently between Region 5 School Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Cashin and the leaders of the Sikh Cultural Center.
McLaughlin said at the meeting that Cashin had recently met with the Sikh leadership in his office to discuss the need for greater cultural understanding, particularly in the schools. Afterward, McLaughlin said, Cashin attended a Sunday Sikh prayer service in an effort to open needed dialogue.
“We look forward, to a time in the not too distant future when such cultural exchanges are not needed, but for now, I am confident that a process has been started whereby a generation of children will benefit from understanding the richness of other cultures, and new American youngsters will be instilled with both pride and comfort relating to their differences.”
McLaughin’s district stretches from Flushing to Richmond Hill.
