Hail Vallone, CALDC

  • To The Editor:
  • Congratulations to Central Astoria Local Development Coalition for stepping up to the plate and passing unanimously a motion to name the new emergency room at Mt. Sinai Hospital of Queens in honor of former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr., who served three decades as Astoria’s elected council official. He cannot be honored enough. Way to Go.

    Updates History

    To The Editor:

I enjoy your history articles on Queens, such as the one in your January 5 edition. Sometimes it is also important to fill in the intervening period.

Your article mentions that William W. Weinstone of Sunnyside was convicted in 1953 under the Smith Act. However, this was nullified on appeal to higher courts because sections of the Smith Act were ruled unconstitutional (not unlike today’s concern in many quarters over sections of the Patriot Act).

In later years, Will Weinstone was selected as one of the “witnesses” in Warren Beatty’s award-winning film “Reds.”

    Sincerely

    Have A Safe Super Bowl

    To The Editor:

If you’re like many Americans who will either be attending or hosting a Super Bowl party, there are some important tips to keep in mind to help make your game day safe and fun.

If your celebration includes alcohol beverages, remember to enjoy good food with your drinks. Space your drinks throughout the evening and if you’re the party host, serve one drink at a time to help your guests pace themselves. Never force drinks on your guests, and stop serving alcohol an hour before the party ends.

Finally, help your guests get home safely by encouraging them to designate a driver. According to a national survey, 122 million Americans have either been a designated driver or been driven home by one. That’s a game-winning plan, no matter what team you’re cheering for.

For more information on hosting a fun, safe party, log on to www.designateddriver.com. Remember, Responsibility Matters.

    Sincerely,

    Blocks Seniors’ Driveways

    To The Editor:

Although we are most appreciative of our Department of Sanitation on how they clear the snow following a blizzard, we always have the problem about the fact that we still do nothing when they re-plow the driveways shut after the sun is out and they are in their “finishing touch” mode, so to speak.

I have an elderly neighbor who was plowed in this morning, when the plowing was entirely unnecessary.

Someone out there must come up with a plan to put an end to this. Perhaps a handicap sign over the garage door, a phone call they can make, or any other suggestion. This request has gone on for years, can be rectified, but, so far, nothing. This would sure be appreciated. As for you members of the press, kindly publish this e-mail in a noticeable place in your respective newspapers!
