GIOIA VISITS ASTORIA CHARTER SCHOOL: Continuing his focus on education, which he has made his top priority since his first day in office, City Councilmember Eric Gioia recently visited the Our World Neighborhood Charter School in Astoria. Gioia visited every school in his district during his first six months in office in the winter and spring of 2002; the charter school visit continues the tradition. Gioia also secured more than $1million to ensure every school in his 26th Council District has Internet-networked computers. He discovered that parents cannot leave messages for teachers or principals after 4 p.m. at more than half the schools in New York City and called for putting answering machines in schools as a simple, cost-effective way to put parents in direct communication with teachers and principals. He also is presenting hardcover dictionaries to every graduate of a public elementary school in his district.
