The Western Queens Gazette welcomes La Hacienda, centrally located at the foot of the 61st Street station of the No. 7 train and the Long Island Rail Road Woodside stop, to Woodside. Owner Guillermo Iglesias built a successful business some years ago making corn tortillas in his factory just behind the newly opened restaurant. He supplies his tasty tortillas to stores and restaurants all across the tri-state area, and of course, serves them in many dishes at La Hacienda. There’s every good reason for commuters and passers-by to stop in after work for a frosty margarita and a traditional Mexican meal, made to order.

La Hacienda is a calm and quiet oasis perched one story above bustling Roosevelt Avenue. Cool tile floors, warm wood and brick walls and green plants make for a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy the delicious food. A complete bar offers a number of Mexican and American beers, cocktails, and of course, margaritas and more. I started with a frozen margarita and chilaquiles, an appetizer that incorporates Iglesias’ famous corn tortillas sautéed with chicken and topped with tomatillo sauce and a sprinkling of cheese ($6). Sopes are tasty snacks of mashed tortillas, chicken, salsa and cheese ($5). Guacamole mixed with tomato and spices and heaped onto crunchy tortilla chips, is always fresh and creamy.

Traditional Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos and enchiladas are all on the menu for lunch or dinner. You can choose your favorite filling—chicken, steak or vegetarian style. Quesadillas, two flour tortillas filled with cheese, spinach, onion, mushrooms and beans are grilled till the cheese is melted and then topped with cool sour cream and pico de gallo sauce. Cut into triangles, they are perfect for sharing. Fajitas are filled with sizzling steak, chicken, shrimp or a combination of two, peppers and onions, and a stack of warm flour tortillas. Building your own fajitas is part of the fun of this hearty meal.

Dinner entrees are made to order and served with seasoned rice and refried beans. I loved the tender grilled bistec La Hacienda style, cooked to perfection and served with a trio of sauces from mild to spicy. Carnitas Don Julio are tender chunks of specially marinated roasted pork served with rice, beans, salsa, tortillas and guacamole for just $11. Mole poblano, a traditional dish, features chicken stewed in Mexican cocoa and spices for a uniquely satisfying meal. If you prefer something simple, a perfectly grilled chicken breast is available, and goes well with one of the fresh salads on the menu. I tried the salad de nopales, which contains strips of cactus and sliced avocado topped with a zesty dressing.

Several shrimp dishes are featured, prepared in a number of ways. These include shrimp ajillo in a rich garlic sauce, shrimp sautéed with mushrooms, onions and green peppers, or simply marinated and grilled. Whichever way you choose, you’ll be in for a treat. Another seafood specialty is fresh red snapper, delicious when sautéed with butter, garlic, tomatoes and spices and served with rice and tortillas for wrapping up all the tasty bits.

Save room for dessert because their homemade rice pudding is irresistible, as are the creamy flan and crepes filled with cajeta, a Mexican caramel.

La Hacienda is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, or you can just stop in for a cocktail after work. Free delivery is available too, so call in an order this week. The service is fast and friendly and the atmosphere is comfortable. La Hacienda welcomes all you amigos!
