It’s Just Great Food And
Great Atmosphere At Just Arthur’s

I can’t say enough good things about Just Arthur’s, which has been prominently situated at Steinway Street and Ditmars Boulevard for more than 18 years. Arthur Tassiello, the amiable owner and chef, is a retired New York City firefighter who treats all his guests like family and knows most of them by name. Peggy, the veteran server, is like an adopted daughter and friend to the steady clientele who have been coming here for years.

Just Arthur’s offers extraordinary, inventive Italian and continental dishes in a comfortable, yet elegant atmosphere. The sturdy, brick building houses a warm, comfortable dining room with hardwood floors, rich wainscot walls and a real fireplace to complement the candlelit tables. Tablecloths in floral patterns, draperies and fresh flowers lend a cozy note to the dining room and soft music fills the air. On any given night, you’ll see couples, young and not-so-young, families and groups of friends sharing a wonderful meal together over a bottle of wine.

The menu at Just Arthur’s offers nearly anything you could want in classic Italian restaurants, such as baked clams, antipasto, roasted peppers, a bounty of pasta dishes and tender chicken, veal and Black Angus steaks. What may surprise and delight you, however, is the dazzling array of nightly specials, all created by Tassiello himself. With so many specials to try, Tassiello has prepared a special tasting menu for sampling several items. We began to devour a plate of butterflied jumbo shrimp topped with crabmeat stuffing and drizzled with lemon butter sauce. A glass of wine and warm crusty bread provided the perfect accompaniment.

Just Arthur’s also offers jumbo shrimp cocktail with traditional cocktail sauce or horseradish sauce, served on chilled plates. Next came a plate of Just Arthur’s own fire-roasted red peppers dressed in olive oil and garlic, served with cubes of sharp parmigiano cheese. One of my favorite specials followed: filet mignon tips sautéed with Chinese hoisin sauce and served over mesclun greens. Grilled filet mignon topped with horseradish-mustard sauce is offered on the regular menu as well.

All of Just Arthur’s pasta dishes are fantastic, be they old favorites such as rigatoni with sweet and hot Italian sausage or linguine with clam sauce or a surprise creation on the specials menu. On the night we visited, the evening’s pasta special was fresh gemelli twists with filetto di pomodoro sauce made with fresh tomatoes, pancetta and finely chopped onions. Just before serving, dollops of smoked mozzarella were melted gently into the pasta, which was then topped with crispy eggplant croutons.

Prime cuts of meat, including Black Angus certified steaks and filet mignon, are purchased daily and all are prepared to your liking. Try a pork chop, pounded thin, breaded and fried till golden, then topped with roasted peppers and fontina cheese. This hearty portion is served with fresh vegetables and potato or pasta. A favorite dish of mine is chicken campagnolo, home-style chicken and grilled sausage sautéed with fiery cherry peppers in a tangy sauce.

If you prefer fish and seafood, try the fresh, flaky Chilean sea bass, or lemon sole francese, dipped in a light egg batter and finished with a butter, wine and lemon sauce.

Desserts at Just Arthur’s are not to be bypassed, so indulge in a slice of apple cranberry cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, carrot cake or a decadent treat called chocolate lava that oozes chocolate when you cut into it. Robust coffee and cappuccino are offered as well.

Just Arthur’s is a great place for a private party, so plan your next engagement, rehearsal dinner, anniversary, shower or business dinner here. The food is delicious, the service is great and the prices are reasonable.

Just Arthur’s is open six days a week for dinner only, from 4 p.m. and closed Tuesdays, except for private functions. Private luncheons can also be arranged. The bar is open six nights a week.

For an evening of delicious food served by friendly people in a comfortable, unpretentious setting, just visit Just Arthur’s
