A Festival Of Fish At Greek Captain Restaurant
If you love fresh fish and sea-food, prepared simply, then a visit to the Greek Captain Restaurant is a must. The first sight of the delights in store is a window that boasts dozens of whole, fresh fish and seafood on ice. You know it’s fresh because there isn’t even the slightest hint of fish in the air.
Owners Angelo (The Captain) and Teresa Skentzos have been welcoming diners for 10 years and will make you feel very comfortable. The adjoining dining room has a clean, nautical motif with whitewashed walls, Grecian blue trim and seafaring decorations on the walls. The handsome woodwork is reminiscent of a ship’s cabin. Service is fast and friendly and best of all, the tip is included in the price of the food.
The one-page menu features only fish and seafood, all brought in daily. In addition, a blackboard out front details special catches of the day. Come right now, while soft-shell crabs are in season. You can have them fried until crispy and brown, or sautéed until tender. You can even share them as a first course.
Order a glass of house wine or an ice cold beer while you check out the starters. Barbecued octopus is one of my favorites, owing to its tender texture and vinegar and oil dressing. There are also crispy baked clams and a shrimp cocktail that features shrimp practically the size of small lobster tails. Hearty fish soup, shrimp chowder or lobster chowder are also great to start with and go well with the fabulous warm, crusty garlic bread.
Greek Captain serves generous portions, so there’s often some food to take home for lunch the next day. The list of fresh fish includes red snapper, porgy, whiting, flounder, salmon steak and halibut steak. Don’t forget the catch of the day. Fish can be broiled or fried and all entrées come with a fresh Greek salad topped with crumbled feta cheese. Choose among crispy golden French fries, baked potato or seasoned rice. Entrées run from $11 to $22 for lobster tails, and remember, the tip is included.
Alaska King Crab legs are popular, as many steady patrons enjoy the sweet, tender meat. Lobster tails are always a treat. You can also indulge in the Greek Captain combination for a variety of fish and seafood. Kids love the fried shrimp, scallops or the crunchy fish and chips.
The secret of Greek Captain’s success is simplicity. Only fresh fish and seafood is served. Dinners come complete with salad and choice of potato or rice. In order to keep their prices low, only cash is accepted.

Greek Captain is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, from 11 a.m. until midnight. Wine and beer are served and families are always welcome. There’s even valet parking on the weekends. Greek Captain is easily accessible by train also. Just take the N train to 36th Avenue.
If you can’t get to the sea, the sea comes to you at Greek Captain, where the fish is always fresh and the service is always fast and friendly.
