Whether or not the Bora Bora Club at 23-70 Steinway St. is an asset or a detriment to the Astoria community that surrounds it depends on who is asked. At land use hearings in Borough Hall last week. Philip Agusta, testifying for the club's owners, claimed that a number of religious and not for profit groups who use the space gratis have put themselves on record in favor of extending the term for the club's cabaret permit. Agusta also testified that the 114th Police Precinct looks favorably on the club's application. Borough President Claire Shulman, who with Deputy Borough President Peter Magnani presided at the hearings, however, said that police who attended the February meeting of Community Board 1 at which the application came up for review had stated they would like to shut down the establishment under the city's nuisance abatement law. Police at the community board meeting had cited overcrowding, constant disputes among club patrons that spill out onto the surrounding sidewalks and parking problems as the main reasons for their concerns.
