Doubbles Restaurant...Great Food With A Great View

E

njoy perhaps the best view of Manhattan available when you dine al fresco on the outdoor patio of Doubbles Restaurant, located on the grounds of the Fila Sports Club, where Long Island City meets the East River. The Fila Sports Club boasts dozens of tennis courts and the latest gym equipment, and, just beyond their outdoor swimming pool, Doubbles Restaurant and patio bar, complete with a breathtaking view of Manhattan. If you were any closer to the river, you’d be in the water. The table we chose was literally on the edge of the East River and provided an absolutely splendid panorama of Manhattan from the World Trade Center to the Queensborough Bridge. Summer is the best time of year to visit for lunch or dinner on weekdays and dinner only on weekends. Bring a camera for the spectacular sunset.

The sporty atmosphere, complete with the sounds of tennis balls being whacked, makes for easy, casual dining. The continental cuisine, however, is first rate. Owner Stanley Cheng has been here 19 years, from the days when the place was the East River Tennis Club. Cheng, who plays at least two hours of tennis each day, looks like a teenager, but in a most mature and conscientious manner, tends to every detail to ensure a pleasurable meal.

Start with a refreshing cocktail from the bar and an appetizer such as the steamed green mussels marinara with garlicky sauce. The lobster cocktail is simply delicious–a half lobster, served chilled with zesty cocktail sauce and lemon wedges that will cool you off on even the hottest day. My walnut salad with shrimp and mandarin oranges was almost too pretty to eat and astonishingly refreshing. Cool and crispy caesar salad hits the spot by itself or tossed with grilled chicken or grilled shrimp.

Hot entrees are prepared to order and beautifully presented. The seafood kabobs of skewered shrimp and tender scallops are laced with vegetables and grilled to succulent perfection, served on a bed of fluffy rice. Grilled chicken is made extra special with a delicious apricot sauce ($10.95). For the same price, grilled double cut pork chops will satisfy even the biggest appetite. All meat entrees come with baked potato and cole slaw. Seafood dishes such as the grilled sea bass ($12.95), come with corn on the cob and cole slaw for a great summer meal. For a lighter bite, try a turkey burger or hamburger, on a bun with french fries ($7.95).

Bring a client, friend or relative to lunch at Doubbles Restaurant to impress with the fabulous view and dine on healthy salads, crab cakes, shrimp cocktail or chicken tenders. A host of fresh sandwiches includes the classics, B.L.T., turkey club and chicken salad. If brunch suits, try a fluffy omelet or french toast made with rich challah bread, served with fresh fruit ($6.95). Whatever one’s menu choice, a meal at Doubbles Restaurant is a memorable experience. Bring guests visiting from out of town for a sight they won’t soon forget.

In inclement weather, and all winter long, Doubbles moves inside the clubhouse for more comfortable dining with the same beautiful view through huge windows. The dining room is available for private parties as well, and holds about 80 people.

Doubbles Restaurant is open Monday through Friday for lunch and dinner from 11 am to 10 pm. On Saturdays and Sundays, dinner is served from 5 to 10 pm. come while the weather is perfect for outdoor dining and you’ll be back all year long for the good food, beautiful presentation, friendly service and the fabulous view.
