An ethnically diverse community, Jackson Heights was home to the nation’s first large-scale co-operative garden apartments and was named for Jackson Avenue (now Northern Boulevard).

The board game Scrabble, was invented here by Alfred Butts, a Jackson heights resident and was perfected at the Community Methodist Church located on 35th Avenue.
