Gray Point Thai Cuisine—Tasteful And Delicious
This chic, petite Thai restaurant is an oasis of delicious food on bustling Greenpoint Avenue in Sunnyside. The restaurant’s ambiance matches the cuisine, with a cool, modern interior that exudes tranquility through smoky blue walls, smooth wooden floors and tidy cherry wood tables that are adorned with pots of fresh orchids. Gray Point’s owner, Ms. Mau, a most gracious hostess, designed the interior and the menu herself.
Waiting diners can relax on a cozy blue velvet sofa and sip on a cool Thai beer or wine before they are seated at one of the 12 comfortable tables or banquettes. Speaking of wine, try a bottle of Monsoon Valley red wine, made in Thailand from grapes that are grown on floating vineyards. The light and fruity flavor will compliment the complex flavors of Thai dishes that Gray Point so deftly prepares.
Thai cuisine incorporates seafood, chicken, pork and noodles with a variety of herbs, spices and fruit juices. Curry, lemon grass, cilantro, chili peppers, coconut milk and lime juice are just some of the ingredients used to flavor Thai dishes. You can have your meal as mild or as hot as you wish by telling your wait person. All dishes are prepared to order and Gray Point’s prices are very reasonable.
Start with crispy shrimp rolls, whole jumbo shrimp wrapped in a dough wrapper and fried till golden ($4.95). The accompanying garlic chili sauce adds an extra kick and since five shrimp constitute a serving, you can share them. Crisp popcorn chicken with sweet and sour garlic chili sauce is ideal for sharing. Gray Point’s steamed dumplings, topped with crunchy garlic bits and served with a tiny bowl of the chef’s special dipping sauce ($3.95) are addictive. Thai Curry Puffs, delicate pastry filled with chicken, potato and onions topped with crunchy garlic bits are served with a tiny bowl of the chef’s special dipping sauce ($3.95). Tom yum soup with aromatic lemongrass has a hot and sour flavor. Coconut soup with chicken and straw mushrooms is another treat. All courses are beautifully presented on dishes of all shapes and sizes with accompanying sauces and garnish of artfully carved vegetables, a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.
Dinner entrees cost between $6.95 and $14.95 and cover something for everyone’s taste. I highly recommend the salmon filet which can be steamed, grilled or fried, then topped with ginger lime sauce and vegetables. We like it spicy, so our dish came with chili peppers as well. Thai red curry, a fragrant broth made of coconut milk and spicy curry paste to which chicken, beef, pork or shrimp are added, is also a somewhat spicy dish that will awaken the taste buds. When spooned over Gray Point’s wonderful Thai rice, it makes an incredibly delicious meal.

Gray Point offers 10 noodle and rice dishes made with or without meat, starting at just $6.95. Pad Thai, sautéed with egg, tofu, bean sprouts, scallions, peanuts and a delicious sauce is perhaps the most famous noodle dish. Thai style fried rice tossed with egg, tomato, onion, cilantro and cucumber is an entrée on its own or an excellent side dish for sharing. Mixed vegetables, sautéed tofu and eggplant are other vegetarian options worth trying. If you eschew alcohol, Gray Point has very refreshing fresh fruit drinks such as coconut juice cooler. Thai iced tea or iced coffee are really something special.
Gray Point Thai Cuisine has economical lunch specials for just $6.95, including a spring roll and salad. Your choice of meat can be made with sautéed rice noodles and broccoli with black bean sauce or in some 10 other ways.
While the spices in Thai cuisine may excite the taste buds, the desserts are cool and calming to the palate. Thai custard is made with a puree of pumpkin and coconut cream, while sweet lychee fruit is served in a cool syrup. For something unique, try the sweet sticky rice with creamy coconut milk and sugar. A crisp and golden fried banana is served with honey, sesame seeds and fluffy whipped cream. Jasmine tea is a great accompaniment.
Gray Point is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. In the evening, there is free delivery on orders of $10 or more and they’re open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. I can’t wait to revisit Gray Point Thai Cuisine to escape the summer heat and enjoy Mau’s gracious hospitality and delicious food.
