ZORAYO GIL “Recently, during the Blackout it was so dark in our building, but there was a young man who had a flashlight and he escorted everyone carefully up the stairs to their apartments. His kindness for people will not be forgotten by us.”

By Rev. Austin H. Armitstead

"What act of courtesy have you witnessed recently in your community?"

BERNARD INCE “I deliver mail to everyone on my route in Queens and they are like my extended family. They expressed their thanks for their mail. After the blackout they would tell me of the kindnesses of everyone who helped each other.”

CHARLES J. WHITTLE “A woman passed by me and my wife and she appeared to be deeply distressed. I suggested that she call 911 and she did. In troubled times the local police helped. We all do our part.”
NOEMI SORIA “My parents were in the local Barber Shop and in our conversation we talked about how so many people told of kindness seen in Long Island City and other places in Queens. During the blackout people reached out to help beyond their families to everyone!”

ERVITA TAUREGIA TRIGOJO “I’ve only lived in the United States a couple of years but I work as a hostess in a local restaurant and I’ve seen how customers helped direct the newcomers to new stores, businesses, schools, the post office, banks, and are very friendly with everyone. We encourage kindliness.”
MARION MITTELKAUF “The Blackout of August 2003 was a very trying time for so many of us everywhere in the city and I was a recipient of so much kindness from my neighbors in my large apartment complex: Food, lights, errands and you name it. I told my friends at my Church, I’ll never forget that day! I thank God! And everyone.
